Lots and lots of people talk about old-fashioned sweets and traditional sweets and, when they do, they usually mean sweet shop favourites from the past like Sherbet Lemons, Pear Drops, Chocolate Limes and Blackcurrant & Liquorice, etc.

More recently, though, the nation seems to have become obsessed with what are now referred to as `retro sweets`.   Retro sweets include a huge range of sweet treats which first hit the sweet shop shelves during the 1970s and 1980s – things like Popping Candy (aka Space Dust), Starburst (aka Opal Fruits), Sweet Tobacco (aka Spanish Gold) and Gold Nuggets Bubblegum (aka Gold Rush).

Other sweets which fall under the umbrella term `retro sweets` include icons we can all probably remember like Wham Bars, Sherbet Dip Dabs, Caramac Bars and Sherbet Fountains .... as well as Nerds and Rainbow Drops which joined the list towards the end of the era concerned.

The term `retro` relates to items which are consciously derived from or which imitate trends or fashions of the recent past and Wikipedia refers to the link between retro and nostalgia.

Nostalgic sweets and vintage sweets are out specialism here at The All Occasion Sweet Shop and we invite anyone reading this Blog to challenge us to find their particular favourite sweet from the 1970s and 1980s if it is not already featured in our ever-increasing selection of online sweets.
